Custom Cigar Box Guitar to be auctioned at 2014 Riverfront Blues Festival Again
You have a chance to ‘win’ a cigar box guitar made by acclaimed blues guitarist JP Soars during the 2014 Riverfront Blues Festival. The guitar will be auctioned during the blues festival with proceeds going to the Riverfront Blues Society. This handcrafted electric guitar features a cigar box body, two strings, and a pickup, so you can play it through your guitar amplifier. Soars features the cigar box guitar in his live performances, often played using a slide. This is a great opportunity to support the blues festival and win an instrument made by one of the leading guitarists in contemporary blues music.
Cigar box guitars date back to the Civil War era and have a long history in American music. These unique instruments became increasingly popular in the early blues era, especially during the Great Depression. Many prominent bluesmen started on these homemade guitars, including Lightning Hopkins. More recently, cigar box guitars have gained popularity as part of the “do it yourself” movement in roots music. Led by contemporary artists and instrument makers such as John Lowe and JP Soars, cigar box guitars are used by a wide range of rock and blues musicians including Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Paul McCartney, the North Mississippi All-Stars, and any many more.
